Achievements (Division of Crop Improvement)

During 2020-21 to 2024-25, the institute released a total of nine sugarcane varieties, viz., CoLk 14204 (IKSHU-8; 2021), CoLk 15201 (IKSHU-11; 2022), CoLk 15207 (IKSHU-12; 2022), CoLk 15466 (IKSHU-13; 2022), CoLk 14201 (IKSHU-10; 2023), CoLk 15206 (IKSHU-14; 2023), CoLk 16202 (IKSHU-16; 2024) and CoLk 16470 (IKSHU-17; 2024) which were notified by the Central Sub-Committee on Crop Standards, Notification and Release of Varieties for Agricultural Crops for commercial cultivation in different agro-climatic zones of sub-tropical India. These varieties exhibit significant improvements in cane yield, sucrose content and contributing to enhanced productivity and resilience in sugarcane cultivation.
During the last five years (2020-21 to 2024-25), a total of 27 sugarcane clones comprising both early and mid-late maturity groups were accepted for multi-location testing in the North West Zone of India under the AICRP(S) programme.
Developed protocol/technology to co-culture Colletotrichumfalcatum (red rot pathogen) with Sugarcane (host) stalks in flasks under in-vitro conditions.
Nano-LCMS/MS-based whole proteome analysis of Colletotrichumfalcatum (red rot pathogen) confirmed that total numbers of proteins are enhanced in C. falcatum during red rot disease.
It was confirmed through Nano-LCMS/MS-based whole proteome analysis of Colletotrichumfalcatumthat the proteins implicated in MAPK signaling pathway are induced during red rot disease and are essential for host invasion and disease development.
It was established by proteome analysis of sugarcane that the total number of sugarcane proteins are significantly reduced after Colletotrichumfalcatum(red rot pathogen) inoculation under in-vivo conditions.
Peptide-abundance investigation of proteins implicated in irreversible sucrose synthesis (SPS, and SPP) signified the fact that majority of these proteins are induced by fungal (C. falcatum) inoculation in sugarcane.
Reversible catalysis of sucrose, carried-out by SuSy (Sucrose Synthase) proteins is enhanced in Sugarcane during red rot disease.
Virus indexed mother cultures of sugarcane varieties CoLk 94184, CoLk 14201, CoLk 16202 were provided to TC Unit of M/s UP Cooperative Sugar Mills, Azamgarh, M/s BalrampurChini Mill, Haidergarh, and M/s Nasirpur Farms, Patiala.
During last 05 years, >78 million tissue culture-raised plants of banana, sugarcane and potato from commercial tissue culture units were certified for virus indexing and genetic uniformity.
49 common significantly differential genes were identified between high- and low- sucrose parents and bulks among which chlorophyll a-b binding protein and psaK were observed as initial points of sucrose-mediated feedback regulation. The high sucrose accumulation during early season coincided with upregulation of transcription factors (TIFY10a and ERF), and genes related to arabinogalactans, glutaredoxin, ethylene and amino acid transporters as well as downregulation of genes for solute transport (PUP, STP) and hormones (ABA and IAA).
Twenty-three miRNA candidates significantly differential for sucrose accumulation and their targets were identified. Among these, 19 differential miRNAs and six selected target genes were validated using transcriptome library-based gene expression levels as well as quantitative PCR. These resources enriches the small RNA inventory of sugarcane.
